Introduction

Class Duration: 1 Hour

Before officially starting to make your rings, you will first have an introductory session with our workshop tutor. In this session, we will go through notes on health and safety, and identify the design of your rings through discussion. Understanding these will help you know how to prevent accident and injury during the process.

Understanding Workshop's Health & Safety

Safety is our priority, during our introductory lesson, our instructor will go through basic rules and guidelines and the importance of health and safety in our workshop. This will ensure a safe working environment and provide better understanding of the material that you will be working with.

Your Material

What is the most suitable colour for you? Dawn Wedding’s Full Workshop service provides 18K gold in 5 different shades of colour, letting you find the most suitable one for you and your partner.

Your Design

The design of your rings will also be identified through discussion with our tutor, who will guide you through ring characteristics like profile, width and length of your rings. This may been seen as one of the most important steps to your ring. Every different profile and width calls to each their own in terms of comfort and outlook. Everyone’s finger shape and sense of comfort is slightly different so you would choose a profile that suits both of your needs.

Session I

Class Duration: 3-4 Hours

Session I is where you will start making your rings. This session revolves around metal forming, and you will go through processes such as annealing, drawing and forming to achieve the shape and width that you desire.

Annealing Metal

Metal is hard but you can soften it, one of the ways is called annealing. Before shaping and bending a piece of metal, you will learn how to anneal a piece of metal which changes the physical composition of the metal for it to become softer. However, metals will still harden over time when shaping and bending continue, so annealing is a repetitive process that you will be very familiar with during the forming process.

Taking Shape

Be prepared! Strength is required to form your desired ring shape and size. You will go through a process called “Drawing”, where you keep pulling your piece of metal until your desired shape is achieved. Patience is highly important in this task as it will determine the precision of your ring shape.

Forming Your Wedding Bands

Forming is fun as you will witness your rings take shape. There are various ways to transform a metal strip into a loop. It can be done by hammering on a mandrel, or by bending it with a plier or, in our case, with an advanced ring bending machine.

Joining Ends

When you have shaped and bent the metal into the shape of a ring, you have to connect the ends, not with glue but solder. 18K solder will be used to fill the gap and join the two ends together. This will be done by heating up the metal and solder. Since the melting point of solder is lower than that of gold, when the solder is melting, it will go through the gaps and join the metal ends together permanently. Steady temperature and precise timing is key in this step.

Session II

Class Duration: 3-4 Hours

Session II revolves a lot around patience and attention to details. This is where you will start to refine your rings layer by layer. To polish it to the effect you want, be it matte or glossy, you will go through processes such as filing, buffing, polishing and texturing. Then, sign it off by engraving your own message on the rings and design how your diamonds should be set. The rings will be passed to our professional diamond setter for setting, to assure impeccable outcome.

Refining Your Surface

By now you should have a rough ring shank, but the surface of our ring will still need refining. Various tools with different levels of coarseness will be used to achieve a smooth ring surface. For example, “Files” will rid your ring of big scratches, “Buffs” and “Sanding Wheels” will further even out your ring surface. You will also learn how to operate a Pendant Motor, which helps you to hold different tools and bring your rings to the brightest shine.

Creating Your Texture

What kind of texture represents you, Glossy, Hammered, or Matte? Depending on the texture desired, our tutor will guide you to achieve different kinds of finish.

Making Your Mark

What can be better than engraving your handcrafted rings personally? Our workshop is equipped with professional engraving machine which allows you to make the perfect engraving by yourself. We provide different fonts for you to choose from to sign your message.

Designing Your Diamonds

Unleash your creativity and decide how diamonds are set on your rings. You will be given a marker to jot down where you would like your diamonds set, our experienced diamond setter will then set the diamonds according to your preference.

What's Next?

After completing the workshop sessions, rings without diamond need approximately 2 weeks to process. As for rings that require diamond settings, our diamond setter requires a month to complete the rings. When your rings are complete, our team will notify you of it’s completion and you may visit our store for collection.
